Luyuan Ge: 2020 Graduate from the School of International Communications (IC), UNNC

Postgraduate Study: Taxonomy, Biodiversity and Evolution, Imperial College London

Taxonomy, biodiversity and evolution focus on the study of contemporary taxonomic techniques to analyse the status and trends of biodiversity. It is in fact very similar to the study of science and the basic requirements are almost the same as other professional programmes at Imperial College. Probably after studying this programme I can be a scientific or field researcher for animal taxonomy and conservation. Another possibility is to work in the media focusing on wildlife, so the combination of IC and this postgraduate programme is very valuable.

I have always loved wildlife and have been very concerned about nature conservation since I was a child, but I didn't connect my future with this interest. After entering UNNC, I had the opportunity to work in a bird sanctuary in India as an overseas volunteer through AIESEC. After comparing this experience with my following internships, I realised that I would like to work in the wilderness. I have made up my mind.

I did not encounter many difficulties when I applied for this programme. However, after I succeeded in moving from social to natural sciences I was still quite unsure of what to do, especially because I lacked the relevant knowledge in molecular biology, phylogenetics and programming. I do realise that I have to make good use of my vacation to better equip myself.

My parents were worried at first as it is so unrealistic to talk about future directions based solely on interests. I did not dare to think about it at first, but I had no interests in other work, so I was struggling and anxious for a while. Later on, I spent a lot of my spare time on activities related to this field and my professional skills have gradually improved. As a result, I embraced more opportunities such as national bird competitions, scientific research, and species surveys. I was finally able to chart my own path to the future. My parents are happy that I have found what I love, and I have their support.

I am one of the founders of NottinGreen Student Society and I am the leader of the Ecology Group. NottinGreen is a group of friends who affirm my values, give me encouragement and offer me a platform to express myself. I have also had the opportunity to meet important birdwatching partners and get to do a lot of things I wouldn't have the motivation to do alone, such as organising the university’s species list and participating in various birdwatching trips. Some UNNC students might remember that the site of the new library used to be a small forest, and I was also involved in helping to organise the bird species descriptions on the outside wall of the construction site when the new library was under construction.

UNNC allowed me to get in touch with high level wildlife workers who had an important influence on my future plans.

Overseas internships opened the door of nature observation for me and there were not many places that could provide such opportunities; and I do like the learning methods at UNNC — we have a lot of time for free exploration. Because of the strong international element around us, my classmates were all more individualistic and less "realistic" in their thinking, which gave me a very comfortable environment for free development.

In fact, when I first entered UNNC, I was in the School of Economics which is known for offering the highest starting salary for graduates of the FHSS. However, as a social science student it was impossible for me to transfer to a natural science programme such as Environmental Science. Therefore, I didn't try to do so at that time. I finally chose the School of International Communications which has more autonomy and is connected with the BBC, WWF, International Bird Federation and other dream jobs.

In addition, IC’s exchange rate (about 98%) gave me the opportunity to spend a year in the university’s UK campus where I gained a lot of valuable experience. In the UK, where the programme of nature observation originally appeared, it was easy for me to make a lot of foreign friends with the same interests in bird observing. I enjoyed the chance to go out with friends who share my interests, which I rarely experienced before when I was alone in China. I have also taken part in a number of local animal rescues, monitoring and conservation projects, all of which were very eye-opening and helped me develop new skills. Upon my return to China, I became more confident in myself to actively interact with people with the same interests, and the outcome of becoming more positive was more opportunities opened up for me.

IC is an interdisciplinary programme and requires good time management skills to balance my interests and study. The first point is to seek the common ground. As IC is a platform for cultivating international talent, I have set my goal as targeting international conservation organisations such as the WWF and the International Birding Federation which will maintain my motivation to continue studying in this programme. The next point is to constantly motivate myself to make learning “interesting”. Observing wild animals is my hobby and compared with other entertainment activities, I always want to go out to observe wild animals on suitable days.

I have done a lot of practical work, whether it is personal nature observation in my free time, or internship-oriented wildlife conservation, working as a research assistant, or taking part in bird watching tournaments and regional species survey projects held in China. All of these have made me more determined in my choice, helped me recognise my own limitations, and improve my professionalism through targeted learning.

I have two memorable internship experiences. The first one is rescuing amphibians which awaken from their hibernacula and return to their ponds to breed in the spring. NottinGreen organised volunteers to help collect hibernacula, including the great toad and the UK's priority conservation, great crested European salamander, and sent them to their breeding grounds. This means such slow-moving animals are not run over as they crossed the road. Another experience is monitoring barn owls. The barn owl is a popular owl in the UK as they help farmers catch many rodents, which is a very important part of the ecosystem. There was an old man in Nottingham who was a barn owl monitor. Every year he would bring some university students and others to put numbered anklets on all the adult barn owls and their babies around the farm and measure their weight and wingspan. I do hope that in the future the protection of animals in China can be more standardised. There are many amphibians living in mountain roads in some well-known attractions. However, every spring and summer, especially after the rain, the ground is covered with their carcasses. This is really heart breaking.

Bird watching gives me the feeling of seeing the world through binoculars in high-definition. It also gives me the pleasure of "adding new species" after recording those new members. Bird watching is very random, and the birds you meet depend on the season, habitat, altitude and luck. It's rewarding to find your target bird species in one place; and if you have a camera you can take good pictures which is also fascinating.

For the time being, I'm jus ‘taking one step and looking around before taking another’. I would like to decide on a career path after I have enough expertise to make an informed choice. To be honest, anything related wildlife and conservation is very desirable for me. After graduation, the current idea is to do a PhD. And after studying broad taxonomy, I’d like to focus on birds or amphibian reptiles for further study.

Taxonomy, Biodiversity and Evolution 专业主要集中在对当代分类学技术的学习，以此来分析生物多样性的现状、走向等，是个十分偏理科的专业。未来的方向大概是动物分类向、保护向的科研或实地调查团队，和国际传播系也有着一定的契合度，比如可以从事 BBC 的野生动物媒体工作者等。

其实自己从小就喜欢野生动物，也比较关注自然保护。就像一个单纯喜欢看百科和动物世界的人一样，当时并没有想过把自己的未来和自然联系在一起。大学之后通过AIESEC（一个负责海外实习的社团组织）选择了相关方向的海外志愿者项目，去印度的鸟类保护区工作，一下打开了自然观察的大门。在经历了几次与自然保护无关的实习后，觉得自己不愿意去做一个生活一潭死水的“社会人”，还是野外能让自己快乐有活力，渐渐就下定决心了。

在申请这个专业的时候其实没有遇到多少阻力，英国研究生的申请比较的人性化，除了学术成绩也看重实践经历。本科期间自己的“贪玩”可能成为了不错的经历背景。在做这样的一个决定之前，也是和父母尝试沟通过的，家里人一开始当然是认为我很不务正业的！因为一个只有兴趣的小白就说未来方向什么的太不现实了。后来就是花了很多自己的业余时间去进行相关领域的活动，随着水平的提高也有越来越多的优质机会比如全国鸟赛、科研、物种调查摆在眼前。就这样自己做的事情逐渐能勾画出一条未来的路，家里人也渐渐开始理解自己的决定。现在他们为我找到所爱而庆幸，全力支持！

在读期间，应朋友的号召，大家联合创立了NottinGreen社团，后担任生态组的leader。社团会有很多人肯定自己的价值追求，给予我鼓励，给我提供了一个表达自己的平台。我也有机会在这里遇到了自己重要的观鸟伙伴，可以去做很多一个人没有动力去做的事情，比如整理学校的物种名录，很多观鸟行程等等。年级较高的同学应该记得，现在图书馆新馆的场地从前是一片小树林，当时为了纪念小树林，还参与了鸟类物种的整理，和几位同学一起推出了名为'Birds in UNNC'的艺术作品展，以此纪念曾经在这片土地上生活的生灵，纪念它们和UNNC一起度过的13年时光。

宁诺所提供的平台，使我能接触到很高水平的野生动物领域工作者，还是给我的未来规划带来了很重要的影响的；海外志愿者的氛围为我打开了自然观察的大门，虽然当时真的只是抱着体验的态度去海外保护区工作，但能找到这种机会的地方确实不多；最后表白下宁诺的学习模式，自由探索的时间很多。身边因为国际化元素浓厚，同学们也都比较有个性，想法没那么“现实”，算是给了我一个很舒适的自由发展环境吧。

其实我入学的时候，选择的是人文社科学院毕业生起薪最高的经济系。当时是想作为一个文科生在国内应该是没法转到环科这样的理科专业的，所以当时就没有做转过去的尝试（现在比较后悔，觉得至少应该试试），而是选择了自主性较强、又能和 BBC、WWF （世界自然基金会）、国际鸟盟等一众梦幻岗位联系起来的国际传播系。

此外， IC 98%交换率让我有机会去英诺交换一年，在那里收获了非常多的宝贵经历。在英国这样一个自然观察起源级别的国家，自己很容易在观鸟的途中结识不少志同道合的外国朋友。之后我的英国自然观察行就变成了一部蹭车史，总是能和圈内的朋友一起出去，这是之前在国内孤军奋战的我很少能体验到的。我也由此参加了不少当地的动物救助、监测和保育，都是很开拓眼界和磨炼技术的事情。回国之后自己也就更有自信去积极地和圈内人交流了，而积极的结果就是更多的机会。

IC和这个学科跨度很大，需要很好的时间管理才能兼顾二者。一方面IC 是培养国际交流人才的平台，于是我一开始就把目标定位在了 WWF，国际鸟盟之类的国际保护组织，这样就会有继续学习本专业的动力是。另一方面观察野生动物本就是自己的爱好，天气合适的日子总是会想出去进行观察，代替了不少其他的娱乐活动。也因为自己的兴趣，会去积极进入这个领域的圈子，因此获得了不少宝贵的机会，有时候一个项目就可以短时间内跟在领域大咖后面学到很多。

为了找到自己的方向，我做了不少尝试，不论是空闲时的个人自然观察，还是实习向的野生动物保护、科研助手，亦或是国内举办的观鸟赛、地区性物种调查项目。这些都让我更加坚定，也认识到自己的局限性，想通过针对性的学习来提高自己的专业水平。

印象比较深刻的几次亲密接触，一次是救助两栖动物。春季是两栖类从冬眠地苏醒，返回池塘繁殖的季节，当时就是作为诺丁汉两栖爬行类组的成员，组织志愿者帮助收集冬眠地的两栖类动物，包括大蟾蜍和英国重点保护的大冠欧螈，送它们去繁殖地，避免这些行动缓慢的动物在过马路的时候被碾压。讲到这点，就想到我国目前两栖类丰富的地区，每到春夏，尤其雨后，山间公路就是横尸遍野，也是挺让人心疼的。

另一次也是在英诺交换做志愿者的时候对仓鸮的监测。仓鸮是英国人民很喜爱的猫头鹰，它们会帮助农场主捕捉很多鼠类，是生态链中很重要的一环，所以春夏之交仓鸮产仔的季节，对它们的数量监测就很重要。当时诺丁汉有一个做仓鸮监测的老人，每年会带一些大学生或者野生动物相关人士给农场周边的仓鸮成鸟和宝宝戴上有编号的脚环，测量体重翼展等。那是我第一次亲身实践保育项目，也是第一次和野生猛禽近距离接触。

关于观鸟带给我的感受，这是个可以通过望远镜能看到纪录片感的高清世界，记录到个人的新种之后又会有种“加新”的快乐。而且观鸟这件事随机性很强，能遇到什么鸟跟季节、生境、海拔、运气都有很大关系，在一个地方找到自己的目标鸟种是很有成就感的事情，鸟的种数增加也就有点像自己收藏夹里的内容物越来越多一样。最后就是，如果有相机的话，拍出好的照片也是个追求。
