为什么选择UNNC(宁诺)?

在 UNNC(宁诺)四年的经历

(Statistics measurement assessment and research of technology)、新加坡国立大学的管理学硕士(Management)等项目。

My UNNC Story | Han Ruoqi:Develop myself by following interests

Han Ruoqi is a graduate of the 2021 International Business Economics programme from Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China). She has received offers from several universities and will be pursuing a master's degree in Statistics, Measurement Assessment, and Research Technology (SMART) at the University of Pennsylvania.

During her four years at NUBS China, Ruoqi found her way through various campus activities and internship experiences. She could express her ideas, grow, work in the areas she loved, and positively impact those around her. She said, "UNNC has allowed me to express myself, find out what I like, and pursue my passion."

Why NUBS China?

  • Support from the family

Ruoqi's parents are supportive of her business studies. "I am vivacious and good at communicating with people. They know my personality and think I am suited to being a business student. In regular life, they also develop my business insights."

  • Better relationship network

In fact, before choosing NUBS China, Ruoqi compared studying abroad and attending a domesticuniversity. "In the end, I was attracted by the unique advantages of Nottingham’s campuses around the globe. Students can better understand the domestic market environment and trends, and corporate culture, as well as build a good relationship network in China. As a business student, I need to understand the market and the overall environment. Considering that I will go back to China in the future, compared with studying abroad, the experience of studying at NUBS China will give me a bonus – a better alumni network. My four years of studying and living in UNNC have been enjoyable, and I am sure that I made the right choice. Living in China and developing an international perspective is what makes UNNC very special."

Four years of experience at UNNC

Express yourself as you grow

  • Extracurricular activities:

In her first year, Ruoqi participated in the "Bra Lab" project for an international non-profit organisation. This project was not only about fostering good habits and attitudes about life in women, but also about undertaking the social responsibility of awakening women’s awareness and the feminist movement.

In her second year, she further developed the project as Project Manager. Part of her work was constantly simplifying the product design and production process of bras to reduce costs, while also taking comfort into account. She distributed these bras to less developed areas, creating social value. Ruoqi said that thisexperience gave her a better and deeper understanding of the concept of "social enterprise" because it allowed her to combine entrepreneurial knowledge and management from the classroom with practice.

  • Internship experience

In the summer of her first year at university, Ruoqi completed an internship at HSBC. Through it, she developed a preliminary understanding of the operations and work of the financial industry. "It gave me a preliminary plan for the development of my future career and made me more determined to choose business. This internship also inspired me to choose International Business Economics as my degree. Since economics is a discipline that emphasises analytical methods, its usefulness is not limited to itself. It can also better help me to quickly understand an industry and develop insights into macro trends.

In the summerof her second year, Ruoqi chose to attend Peking University’s summer school, whose courses mainly focused on Cross-Cultural Studies. "Although other students may choose courses that are closely related to their degrees while at summer school to consolidate their knowledge, I chose to follow my interest and broaden my understanding. As nothing is certain, and in UNNC, you are not forced to dothings, use your passion and do what's good for you."

During the summer of her third year, Ruoqi went to Accenture Management Consulting. "Onsite consulting in a client's company gave me the valuable opportunity to look at an enterprise from an external perspective, analyse its current situation, find out its weak points, gain insights into its needs, and offer solutions to improve its efficiency and profitability. This internship allowed me to understand the methodology of management consulting, the practitioners'requirements, their living and working conditions, and the clarity of my future career development path. With a clearer goal and guidance from the senior employees during the internship, I was motivated to apply for Ivy League schools."

Looking back on her internship application, Ruoqi said she was very grateful for the ampleresources that UNNC provided, such as mock interviews, the Admissions & Career Development Office’s (ACDO) help in her CV revisions, and the STAR Career Talks."These resources gave me a better understanding of what was going on in the industry, and I successfully got my offer."

  • Master's application:

During the application season, although she was under pressure from both GRE preparations and the degree programme, her hard work was rewarded when she received several offers: Applied Economics at John Hopkins, SMART at the University of Pennsylvania, Management at the National University of Singapore. Eventually, she decided to pursue her further study at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Hobbies:

Ruoqi found her interest in wine tasting after attending an activityduring a Department of Campus Life (DCL) workshop, where she also received a certificate in practice. In addition, Ruoqi likes clothes with a sense of design, so she designed a series of clothes together with her friends during her undergraduate study.

Grow up with the help of UNNC

Looking back on her four years of university life, Ruoqi is very grateful for UNNC’s education system and methods.

"What impresses me most is the small class system of UNNC. In small classes, the teachers encourage us to question, and we discuss constantly. They guide you to think instead of directly giving 'standard answers', and what they develop is creativity and the ability of independent and critical thinking. Each student will be cared for and encouraged in small classes. There are many resources that UNNC can provide to every student, from office hours and email appointments to the Moodle platform, which provides online and offline academic support.”

"I got a lot of help from my personal tutor, DrHaibo Zhou. When I was faced with the confusion of career choice and academic development, she would listen patiently and give me greatsuggestions, which helped me handle the pressure. At the same time, she also introduced me to some graduates who are now engaged in entrepreneurial projects that I am interested in, giving me a lot of opportunities and help. She has been a mentor to me, and I am very grateful to her.”

Sharing experience

Highlights

"In my four years at UNNC, finding my true passionis more important than postgraduate choices and my degree. If we candiscover our true purpose, wewill also discover how different people are. There are thousands of different definitions and standards for success."

As Harry R. Lewis argued thatthe purpose of college is to provide young people with opportunities to experiment and explore, to discover new ways of seeing the world, and to discover new abilities with themselves in the process.

Excerpt from Excellent Sheep by William Deresiewicz

"I think internships are important because they allowstudents to apply what they have learned to reality. Internships also consolidate our understanding of what we have learned in class."

Talkabout your further study application.

"In fact, my decision to pursue graduate studies in the United States came from my internship experience at Accenture, where I met many outstanding senior colleagues. As consultants, they often come from G5 universities in the UK or the top colleges in the US. I hope that a top American university can helpme broaden my 网址未加载pared withthe G5, there will be more choices available when applying for the best UScolleges, and the USevaluation system will be more varied. In general, your intangible assets will be given more weight. Furthermore, having experienced the British-style education system as an undergraduate, I want to experience the American education system as a graduate student."

"As an undergraduate from a British-styleuniversity applying for a master's degree in the United States, I think it is appropriate to supplement one’s skills with some courses on quantitative methods depending on the direction of the application. If so, I recommend Coursera. In the process of applying for a college, it is recommended that you have your own criteria of a 'good school'and the purpose of applying for graduate school in mind. It is better to clarify your own standards first."

When we are taking about the career plan, Ruoqi said her career development goal is management consulting. At the same time, she hopes to become an independent woman and have an impact on society through business, so that enterprises can operate with more vitality, create more job opportunities, and produce greater societal value.
