Talking about the short story, Ernest Hemingway is one must for all readers. Ernest

Hemingway is one of the greatest 20th-century American writers who have a tremendous influence on the literature. His “iceberg” technique makes most of his stories meaningful and effective. “Cat in the Rain” is the one of the best.

A couple of American stays in an Italian hotel in a rainy day. The wife catches a sight of a poor cat crouching under a table from the rain outside. She wants to bring it in. However when she comes to the yard only finds the cat is missing. After returning to the room a maid sends her another cat.

Hemingway said:“There is seven-eighths of it underwater for every part that you show. Any thing you know you can eliminate and it only strengthens your iceberg”. With the “iceberg” theory given by Hemingway, it reveals a fact that the design of every scene, character, plot, movement has its implicit meaning.

This short story reveals the unconscious struggle in the wife?s heart, which is between the pursuit of freedom and independence, and being conditioned with the traditional woman

situation. This notion is manifested by the feature of the characters, the conversations, and the reaction of the figure and so on. And the cats, which can be considered the main character, are the most impressive ones.

The wild cat couching under the table in the heavy rain symbols the freedom and independence which the wife chases subconsciously. In the opposite, the domestic cat, which is sent by the hotel keeper, represents the traditional woman social status or situation—being protected, submissive and tamed. At seeing the wild cat in the rain, a desire of possession arises in the wife?s heart, and even she herself can?t explain why she wants the cat so much. Such kind of desire reveals the pursuit of freedom and independence of the wife. However, Hemingway didn?t give a clear ending that whether the wife receive the domestic cat or not. In my point of view, because the wife doesn?t realize her inside feeling, her confusion, or rather conflict between freedom and tradition is showed quiet clearly.

Besides the cats, the theme disclosed by male figures, the husband and the hotel keeper in the story can be found through analyzing their attitude to the wife. Concerning the

conversations between the wife and the husband, the response of the husband, compared with his wife?s emotional and long dialogues, is shorter but stronger. Take the husband?s

reaction to the wife at the beginning, what he says is, “I?ll get it”, “Don?t get wet” or “shut up and get something to read”at the final. All of these dialogues are seemed more like an order than a suggestion.

As for the hotel keeper, every time the wife passing by him, a feeling of affection arises in the wife. Hemingway devoted several sentences to describe the reason why the wife likes the hotel keeper at the first time she passing. She likes the way he received complaints, his dignity,

The heroine Bella Swan was a general girl at the age of 17-year-old who has poor movement, as well as her skin was too pale just like the sick people. Differently, the hero Edward Cullen was a mysterious male who had the same age with Bella. They all lived in a small town named Forks existed under a near-constant cover of clouds in the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State. He not only has the charming appearance and strong body but also has ability to see through people’s heart. In effect, he came from a vegetarian vampire family. As the time went by, he found that he had already fallen in love with Bella deeply. However, their world still had a lot of difficulties and challenges. The time wheel disk to him is the coagulation, but it is the rapid rotation to her. Even so, they still chose to be together with each other bravely.

It was true that these novels were very popular among young people. But seldom did we know the author of these novels was Stephenie Meyer who was born in the state of Connecticut which located in the Unit State. In effect, she is a full-time housewife who had three children, as well as she has rarely experience about writing. But why she can make so great achievements in her life? The reason for her success came from many aspects.

First and foremost, she had a dream one day in 2003 that a lovely girl and a handsome boy were concerning with love and romance on the green, which changed her destiny. After a period of time, she began to writing with passion. She not only needs to take care of her three children under the age of five, but also she insisted on typing by one hand. After 3 months, Meyer successfully completed the Twilight.

Naturally, that dream eventually became one of the chapters in his first novel—Twilight. Another important reason is that Meyer was crazy about the world famous novels in her childhood and she majored in English literature during her university, with the result that she had profound knowledge of English language and literature. Last but not least, the time she lived is full of soft hearted affectionately. His family believed with Mormonism faith, so she did. To a great extent, all above special backgrounds became the source power of her writing.

Qiong Yao's Love stories are read by almost every student in our school. As a result, many students are not doing as well as they used to in their studies. For this reason, the school authority decided to put a ban on those stories.I don't think the prohibition is necessary. To begin with, Qiong Yao is a successful novelist. She has portrayed the characters so well that the readers are always moved. Her stories help us learn more about society. Secondly, after reading the stories, readers tend to compare the experience of the characters with their own to learn a lesson. In this way, they gain more experience about life.

That isn't bad, is it? Finally, the language is beautiful. Readers find it an enjoyment to read her stories.Maybe, the school authority and teachers are afraid that in Qiong Yao's stories there is something unhealthy which may affect the minds of the students. But then we are old enough to deal with it properly. I suggest that the Communist Youth League Branch hold discussions to guide young students along the correct way to growth ideologically.
