International Creative Pattern Design Competition 2014

Since October 2010, the creative pattern design competition and exhibition, which focused on pattern culture communication and interpretation, has been successfully held for four years by the Hangzhou Municipal Government and China Academy of Art. This year, Hangzhou Municipal Government will continue to cooperate with China Academy of Art and hold the International Creative Pattern Design Competition in October 2014, organizing related activities as competition, exhibition and symposium.

The theme of the ICPD competition 2014 is “Power of Folk Arts”, interpreting traditional skills, esthetic accumulation and cultural symbols of folk decorative art with the modern design methods from the perspective of creative patterns, so as to demonstrate the vitality and glamour of folk culture and art. In the interaction between patterns and industry, patterns and brands, we further promote the core value of “our vernacular creation”. An international jury will be set up for the competition and entries will be collected on a global basis. Under the supervision of the academic institution International Pattern Design Alliance and industry advisors, this competition will be a professional platform to explore innovative designers.

III. Event theme and its interpretation

Folk art is the materialized form of concepts of folk culture, closely related to the arts, aesthetics, sociology and folklore. Public competition through dialogues between folk art and design, rural towns and cities, traditions and modernity, and dialogues between artists, designers and creators of folk art makes us experience personally the vitality and power of folk art.

Entries should be focused on "Powerful Folk Arts". At the same time they are to reflect the following:

To express the charm of folk arts in the perspective of patterns;

To reflect the fusion of art and technology with creative patterns;

To explain the relationship between design and daily life with the patterns of daily life

IV. Contestants’ qualification:

Professionals, college teachers and students engaged in art and design worldwide and any others who are interested in the competition

V. Competition content and requirements:

According to the theme of this competition, the entries should focus on pattern creation in textile, costume, industrial modeling, architecture and other related areas. We emphasize their originality, fashionability, comprehensiveness and interdisciplinary character. The entries should embody the creativity of the theme concept, the system and integrity of design. In addition, the entries should reflect the fusion of technology and art, forming a new material language and formal language.

VI. Competition Procedure and Schedule

The competition is divided into preliminary stage and final stage, and the contestants should submit the descriptive file of their entries before July 7th, 2014 for the preliminary stage. After the judging, those qualified for the final stage should provide the objects of the entries. The detailed requirements for the final stage will be announced later.

1. Application deadline: July 7th, 2014.

2. Deadline for the submission of descriptive files on the preliminary stage: July 7th, 2014 (according to local postmark).

3. Preliminary judging of the entries: early July, 2014. The list for the final stage will be announced on the official website of China Academy of Art..

4. The judging, ceremony and forum for the entries for the final stage will be held on Oct. 16th – Oct. 20th, 2014 in Hangzhou. Please refer to the qualification notice for the final stage by the ICPDC Organizing Committee.

VII. Competition Instructions

1. Entries should stick to the theme and objective of the competition.

2. Entries should originate from the contestants without prior publication in other media. The contestant will be disqualified and investigated for legal responsibility with a plagiarized entry.

3. Entries should be a systematic serial design and the application should be based on a series.

4. There is no limitation on the contestant’s gender, age, profession, education, nationality or ethnicity. If the serial entry has been designed by several designers, the first-listed name is regarded as the main designer and co-designers should be less than two.

5. According the ICPDC organizing regulation, the staff on the ICPDC Organizing Committee is disqualified in the competition.

(1) The entries will not be returned whether or not the application is accepted, and the applicants are recommended to have a backup.
